Goals galore across Bury’s attacking front left the Shakers in seventh heaven after a 7-0 win over Ilkeston Town at Gigg Lane. Seven goals from five different goalscorers proving the perfect tonic to Bury’s recent dry spell up front.
From the off Bury were on the attack. Crosses on either wing from Melhado and Kai Evans just missed connection with Tom Carr in the middle. Melhado then found Evans who volleyed over the bar.
In the middle Carr, Mo Touray and Owen Robinson moved the ball around brilliantly with Touray seeing a shot from the edge of the box palmed away. Kai Evans then shot into the side netting and a diving header by Carr missed a Robinson cross by a whisker.
At last Bury found the back of the net. Kai Evans driving into the box pulled the ball back to Tom Carr, he laid the ball off to Owen Robinson to finish from six yards.
This goal opened the floodgates. Two minutes later the Shakers earned a penalty after Robinson was caught by a defender in the box. Kai Evans took responsibility and while Sam Wilson in the Ilkeston goal guessed the right way he couldn’t reach the well placed spot kick.
The onslaught continued unabated. An Evans cross just missed Melhado at the far post before the Shakers grabbed a third. Leo Graham beating the offside trap chasing a simple ball over the top and finishing brilliantly into the far corner.
Rocked by three goals in just six minutes the visiting Ilkeston could only weather the storm. Melhado looking dangerous shot over the crossbar while a Mo Touray effort left the keeper stranded and went just wide.
Another Touray shot was saved and put out for a corner. From the set piece Kai Evans’ looping effort was cleared off the line.
The Robins couldn’t get out of their own box. Touray and Louis Isherwood both had goalbound shots blocked before Tom Carr poked home from close range as the keeper desperately tried to keep the ball from crossing the line.
There was still time in the first half for Mo Touray to strike the post with another chance while a rare Ilkeston attack saw Jevin Seaton denied by keeper Mitch Allen making his 100th Bury appearance.
If there was any question of the Shakers relenting in the second half it was quickly answered with a long range strike by Robinson that whistled past the post. It was fellow midfielder Leo Graham who was first to grab a second goal latching onto a deep free kick, he ghosted past his marker and fired into the bottom corner for Bury’s fifth of the day.
The only Shakers attacker yet to score was Mo Touray but he finally got his goal after a neat one-two with Robinson and placed his shot into the bottom corner with his last touch of the match before being substituted.
The substitutes soon tried to get in on the act Anthony Dudley volleyed over the bar and Luca Navarro forced a save from Wilson. Murat Aygodan was so close to a Hollywood moment striking on goal with his first touch in senior football, only a deflection off an Ilkeston defender prevented him from a goal on his debut.
More chances poured in throughout the second half Navarro twice going close while Jes Uchegbulam could have got his first Bury goal when he broke through on goal but passed when he perhaps should have tried his luck.
The final goal arrived late on as Carr burst into the box but was felled by Lyndon Joyce who was sent off for a second bookable offence. Carr took responsibility for the penalty and fired down the middle to complete the rout.
