Bury suffered a late 3-2 defeat away at Guiseley on a disappointing Tuesday night at Nethermoor. A frantic start was cancelled out by a ruthless home attack before late heartbreak saw the Shakers return home empty handed.
Bury fans who arrived late crossing the Pennines would have missed a brilliant opening few minutes of the match. Bursting through the middle DJ Pedro outpaced the last defender to a loose ball and slotted past the keeper Jack Hall to give Bury the lead in the third minute.
Soon after the restart Pedro blocked a clearance allowing Bury to win the ball again, Rustam Stepans’ shot had to be palmed away by Hall. The Shakers soon got a second goal as Kai Evans shrugged off his marker before placing a shot to the same bottom corner to give Bury a 2-0 lead on seven minutes.
The hosts quickly changed shape and did well to stifle Evans play. The direct counterattacking style suited the Lions and soon they were creating chances themselves
From one corner kick Mitch Allen had to dive on the ball following a scramble while the Bury defence had another warning shot from a corner as a free header was placed wide of the mark.
Bury were not passing well or able to keep the ball away from Guiseley for long. The pressure told and when one long range effort hit the crossbar Aaron Martin was on hand to score on the rebound. Bury’s protests for offside fell on deaf ears.
Guiseley soon claimed an equaliser, Martin again finishing off a swift counterattack with huge gaps in the Shakers defence laid bare.
Faced with having to regain the lead all over again Bury found the Guiseley defence much tougher to break down, Pedro went closest with a looping header that landed on the roof of the net.
After the break chances were more scarce for both sides. Owen Robinson came closest for Bury with one shot from outside the box having to be pushed away by Guiseley keeper Hall and another long range effort crashing off the woodwork after good build up play by new arrival Jes Uchegbulam.
The match seemed headed for a stalemate before on the 90th minute Guiseley won a free kick in a dangerous area and in a packed box Guiseley substitute Jordan Thewlis got the meaningful touch to beat Mitch Allen and earn all three points for his side.
